Application for “Mama Greece”
(borrowed image from R-Ninja on DA)
The Basics:
Nation: Ancient Greece
Name of Character: Calandia Karpusi
Age: 46
Gender: Female
Country of origin: Greece
Blood status: Pure-blood
School:
House: Hufflepuff
Subject(s): Astronomy Professor, Transfiguration Professor
(Other jobs: Head of House for Hufflepuff)
Appearance:
Eyes: Bright green
Hair: Dark brown, wavy. Usually pulled up into a complex knot.
Other features: Sometimes, she’ll come to teach dressed in a long, flowing, Grecian toga. It’s a habit of hers. She is also generally barefoot.
She is also an animagus, a Cretan Wild Cat to be precise.
Character Background:
Likes: Astronomy, Cats, Architecture, Music, Grapes, Wine, anything classically Greek
Dislikes: Dogs, Dishonesty, Needless Violence, Flight
Personality: Calandia is as laid-back a professor as they come. She doesn’t mind if you’re late to class, as long as you have a valid reason. She doesn’t mind if you turn in homework late – as long as you get it done. However, should she find that you’ve lied to her about your reasons for either, expect to spend extra time in class the next time, or have an extra assignment given to you. She doesn’t tolerate dishonesty.
Outside of the classroom, she doesn’t mind spending extra hours to help someone understand the subjects she teaches, as astronomy is the nearest thing to her heart other than classical Greek poetry and Art, and Transfiguration is a deep passion. She will also listen to any student’s problems, whether from her house or another, and attempt to soothe them in any way she can. It’s mostly a mothering instinct.
Pet?: Yes, a pure black owl named Artemis.
Background: Calandia was born in Volos, Greece to a pure-blood family. She lived most of her life there, even attending the Greek school for Witches and Wizards. While at school, she fell in love with Astronomy, and decided to turn that into her profession. She also took an interest in Transfiguration, ultimately deciding to challenge herself to become an Animagus. She succeeded; her chosen animal was a Cretan Wild Cat, something that had fascinated her for a while.
Upon graduation, she began to travel the world, studying as much as she could about differing regional constellations and how they saw the stars, as well as the occasional new Transfiguration technique. The stories she collected are oftentimes shared with her students as they chart the same constellations. She encourages them to come up with their own constellations as well, and is always interested to hear about any new ones they might have cobbled together.
She’s taught at Hogwarts for around ten years now, having settled in London for some time. She saw no reason not to share her experiences with a younger generation, especially a younger generation of witches and wizards.
Relations with other characters:
Heracles: I’m assuming some type of familial relationship.
Hufflepuffs: They’re her House. She knows the students by name.
Sample:
“All right, students. Focus your telescopes on Orion’s belt. From there, you should be able to chart the entirety of the sky. It is, after all, one of the most recognizable of constellations.” Calandia stated softly as she moved between the students atop the astronomy tower.
“The stars in his belt have many other names as well. Does anyone know any of them?” She’d wait for a few moments, listening to the sounds of quills scratching on parchment, before continuing onward. “The Three Kings, the Three Marys, Väinämöisen’s Scythe, Bintang Tiga Beradik – or Three Brother Star, the Ell, Our Lady’s Wand, or, simply, the Three Stars.”
The hour-long class seemed to fly by in her opinion; she wasn’t entirely sure what her students thought. “Please remember to finish your star charts before next week. I’ll expect them handed in before class. If you need any assistance, you may either stay now, or contact me by owl during the week. Everyone sleep well.” She turned to gather her own silver telescope and star charts as the students filed down through the trapdoor.
